The Reunification of Oakville

The Reunification of Oakville is a radical, yet pragnatic proposal for creating a long overdue linkage between North Oakville and the Old Town, along Trafalgar Road and accross the QEW.

The spine of this linkage would be formed by an elevated pedestrian and bicycle pathway, going through a chain of commercial modules suspended over Trafalgar Road.

While walking or cycling to Downtown, people could also shop and do business in a safe and comfortable environment. Live-work units and small flats could also be incorporated for maintaining a human presence at all times. The green roofs would contribute to maintaining an all-year-round pleasant microclimate. In addition to creating indoor space, the arch-shaped glazed modules wrapped around the existing overpass would also collect solar energy. They would be supported by concrete piers placed on the median and shoulders of the highway. All structural elements could be prefabricated, transported and constructed with minimal disruption to the vehicular traffic. Although the structure would cost more than a typical plaza, it will not require land and will therefore be more economical.

The central module could be expanded to accommodate the Oakville transit station for a LRT (Light Rapid Train) to be developed in the future over the QEW. This train could provide convenient public transit, without taking additional land, and by reducing car traffic, it would free the highway for moving goods more efficiently and with less pollution.

This multipurpose linkage could be integrated into the Mobility Hub proposed by Metrolinx for the Midtown Urban Growth Centre. The relocated GO station, Oakville Place, the Town hall, the Senior’s apartment buildings, and several proposed new developments, such as the Silver Hotel, could be conveniently connected. Oakville will become more livable for all residents thanks to a healthier environment; yet improved mobility for a growing senior’s population will be the greatest achievement.

In order for this concept to become a viable project, a feasibility study shall be undertaken to examine all issues involved, including the creation of a Public-Private Partnership, especially for the development of the commercial components. It shall also be viewed as a prototype and model to be adapted and applied again in other locations. Therefore the higher levels of government shall assist the Town of Oakville in this unique endeavor with great positive environmental, social and health benefits. Considering all the elements involved for the long term, this project would also give a much needed boost to Ontario's economy.

The Reunification would bring Oakville into the spot light of the urban scene and will enhance the town’s reputation of being a forerunner in new urbanism, heritage preservation and environmental protection.
